Love Notes

October 23, 2017

Types of Love The Triangular Theory of Love Three different building blocks are presumed to combine to form different types of love: Intimacy feelings of warmth, understanding, communication, support, and sharing Passion emotional arousal and sexual desire Commitment the decision to stay in a relationship and to work to maintain it Different mixtures of these components create different experiences: Nonlove intimacy, passion, and commitment are all absent. Liking high intimacy, but little passion or commitment. Infatuation just passion. Empty love commitment without intimacy or passion. Things get more interesting when two or more components are combined: Romantic love a combination of intimacy and passion. Companionate love high intimacy and commitment, but little passion. Fatuous love -- passion and commitment in the absence of intimacy. Consummate love intimacy, pa...

Responding to Rudeness

April 17, 2015

Here's an interesting article that offers interesting suggestions for Responding to Rudeness which should work well in a class in the discussion of conversation or a variety of other interpersonal topics. Among the suggestions offered are how to respond to catcalls, unwanted and negative comments on your appearance, or friends who reveal personal information. It would be interesting to see how students would deal with each of these several issues and if there's a gender or age difference in the responses.

Citing a Blog Post

May 21, 2013

A number of peoplemost recently a student from Malaysiahave asked how to cite a blog post. Generally, I think this should do it: For APA style: Last name of author, first initial. (Date of publicationyear, month, day). Title of blog post. [Web log post]. Retrieved from Blog URL. So, if you were citing a recent post from my own blog, it would look like this: DeVito, J. (2013 April 30). Interviewing exercise. [Web log post]. Retrieved from htpp://tcbdevito.blogspot.com. Another style manual does it a little differently: DeVito, J. (2013, April 30). Interviewing exercise. Retrieved from http://tcbdevito.blogspot.com. For MLA Style: Authors last name, first name initial. Title of post. Title of blog. Date post was written. Date post was accessed. DeVito, J. Interviewing Exercise. The Communication Blog. 30 April 2013. 21 May 2013. Hope this helps.

Deception Detection at Airports

May 04, 2014

Here is a New York Times article on deception detection at airports or, rather, the lack of it. And after a $1 billion plus investment! There is also a great interactive link within the article that will prove interesting in a class discussion.

Nonverbal Communication Project

September 11, 2012

Here is exercise that I'm working on for a nonverbal book I'm doing that I thought might be useful. It contains just a few general instructions for creating a video and lots of video examples. Although most clearly directed at the nonverbal course, I thought this might also be appropriate in interpersonal and hybrid courses as well. The videos noted here might also prove useful to interject periodically throughout a course in nonverbal/interpersonal/human communication. Creating a Video of Nonverbal Communication An excellent experience for learning about nonverbal communication is to teach it. Consequently, a popular assignment in many nonverbal communication courses is to create a video to teach some aspect of nonverbal communication. You might then upload it to YouTube or some similar site, exchange videos with others, and critique each others videos. There are numerous websites that illustrate and demonstrate the ways to go about making a video. For example, http...

Prosocial Communication

November 04, 2016

This discussion of prosocial communication is a preliminary version of a section I'm considering adding to the new edition of The Interpersonal Communication Book . It would be the final section of the last chapter. I'd be very interested in hearing what you think of this section. Any comments, positive or negative, will be greatly appreciated. Prosocial Communication In Chapter 10 we looked at the dark side of interpersonal relationships (jealousy and relationship violence) and, in this chapter, we looked at the misuses of power (sexual harassment, bullying, and power plays), other dark sides. As a counterpoint to these dark sides we need also to highlight the more positive sides of interpersonal communication and relationships or what we might call prosocial communication . Here we consider the nature of prosocial communication, the factors that influence or inhibit such communication, some examples of prosocial communication, and some of its potential effects. The Na...

Talk to Connect

December 14, 2012

Here is a guest post written by Leah DeCesare. Leah DeCesare is a writer and blogger ( www.MothersCircle.net) writing about perspectives on parenting from a mother of three, educator and doula. She is a certified birth and postpartum doula as well as childbirth educator and Certified Lactation Counselor, serving families in Rhode Island. Leah is currently conducting the Mothers Circle Young Womens Birth Survey open to 18-26 year olds ( https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/youngwomensbirthsurvey .) She is the Co-Founder and Co-President of Doulas of Rhode Island, a past DONA International Northeast Regional Director and she volunteers with Families First RI. Meta Description: I like to talk. I talk to connect and get closer to people. Most people like to talk. Connecting is human, talking is still our most genuine way of connecting. I like to talk. I talk to connect and get closer to people. What Ive realized is most people like to talk - and talk a lot. People talk...

Facebookers Narcissists?

May 23, 2012

Here's a brief article from the NYTimes which reports on Lynne Kelly's research into narcissism and Facebook use. According to Kelly's findings, Facebook use is not associated with narcissism. However, those who collect huge numbers of virtual friends do seem to be high on narcissism. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/does-facebook-turn-people-into-narcissists/

50 Communication Strategies

November 08, 2012

Ive assembled (and rewrote) some of my blog posts and a variety of other brief pieces into a book that I published with iUniverse, a subsidy publisher (recently acquired by Penguin, a division of Pearson), called 50 Communication Strategies. One of the advantages of publishing a book this way was that I didnt need an agent. Textbook authors rarely have agents; in fact, I dont know of one textbook author who does have an agent. The other great advantage is that you dont have to write a proposal. There are also disadvantages to doing a book this way as well. But, on balance, the procedure was relatively painless and certainly fast moving. They even set up a website for the bookwww.50communicationstrategies.com. In general, I'm very pleased with the finished product.

Power Notes

November 30, 2017

Power and Interdependency Power is the ability to influence the behavior of others and to resist their influence on us. Sources of Power From an interdependency perspective, power is based on the control of valuable resources. One need not necessarily possess these resources; one needs only to control access to them. One s power varies with the other person s desire and need for the resource. One s power is reduced if the desired resources are readily available elsewhere. The principle of lesser interest observes that the partner who is less dependent on the relationship who desires it less has more power in that relationship. If your partner loves and needs you more than you love him or her, you ll get to do what you want more often than not. Types of Power Relationships How power is distributed complementary relationships: uneven division of power; one person controls th...
